Gernot Rieder is a postdoctoral research associate in the INNORES project, focusing on the byproducts and residues of digital innovation. His work is located at the nexus of infrastructure, business, and political regulation, with a particular emphasis on current dynamics surrounding artificial intelligence and the related data center build-out.

From 2019 to 2022, he was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Ethics in Information Technology (EIT) research group at the Department of Informatics, University of Hamburg, before joining the CoPol project at the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities, University of Bergen. He is an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Advanced Studies, Oslo, for the 2025/2026 academic year, studying the co-production of artificial intelligence and politics as part of the project Acting on AI.

In his dissertation (IT University of Copenhagen), Gernot investigated the rise of Big Data in public policy and the social and ethical implications of algorithmic decision-making. From 2014 to 2018, he served as an Assistant Editor for the SAGE journal Big Data & Society.

Gernot has published on issues ranging from Big Data and AI imaginaries to questions of trust and trustworthiness in the context of socio-technical systems to value-sensitive design and the need for moral accountability. He co-organized the CEPE/IACAP Joint Conference 2021 and guest-edited the conference’s topical collection in the Springer journal Digital Society.
